One sentence more than any other however sums up the work of this fifty one year old Japanese architect, “I want to erase architecture. I have always wanted to do that and I don’t think I will ever change my mind”.
“Anti-object” is in fact the theme of the lecture that Kengo Kuma will be giving in the afternoon of Monday 13 June, as part of the “Projects in progress” event organised by the Facoltà di Architettura e Società at the Politecnico in Milan, the Dipartimento B.E.S.T. and the Post graduate research in technology and design for environmental quality at an urban and building scale. The lecture will be introduced with a welcome from the head of the faculty, Pier Carlo Palermo and director of B.E.S.T. Fabrizio Schiaffonati, and a presentation by Andrea Campioli.
Born in the Kanagawa district, Kuma teaches at the Faculty of Environmental Information at Keio University. In 1987 he founded the Spatial Design Studio and in 1990 Kengo Kuma & Associates. He became known in Italy when he took part in the 1995 Venice Biennale with the Japanese Pavilion and in 2000 with an exhibition at the Triennale in Milan in 1996.
