Terragni: European Architect

Hope of a new order, complete adhesion to the rationalist project, bitter confrontation with the reality of war; these are the vicissitudes of the life of Giuseppe Terragni (1904-2004) that take the visitor around an exhibition at the former church of San Francesco in Como. Two entrances lead into what is a labyrinth of photographs, drawings and writings (on show 82 projects illustrated with original material). Everything is highlighted, almost as if to evoke satisfaction and discomfort, by the use of black and white. White characterises the background of the photographs by Paolo Rosselli of his most famous architecture (see Domus no. 866, no.867) while black is used to frame a self portrait in military uniform from 1929. Two routes, ambivalent and of opposing signs, arrive though at the same destiny, a kind of point of no return: the photographs and drawings that Terragni carried out between 1942 and 1943, during the Russian campaign. To find out more about his architectural work, its genesis and development, a visit to the ex casa del Fascio is in order, where up until September 26 the exhibition “Terragni between reason and utopia” is showing, made up of films, soundtracks and projections.
