All Koolhaas in an “XL” exhibition in Berlin

The exhibition that opened last Friday in Berlin is the largest ever organized on the work of the world’s most glamorous architect, Dutchman Rem Koolhaas (born in 1944), his architectural “office” OMA (85 people, based in Rotterdam) and the theoretical-conceptual think-tank AMO. The occasion is offered by the imminent inauguration of the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin, designed by the Dutch practice. Even the venue for the exhibition, the Neue Nationalgalerie by Mies van der Rohe, seems the most appropriate location for the works of one of the internationally most controversial theoreticians and professionals, a former winner of the Pritzker and the Praemium Imperiale prizes.

Occupying the front line in research into materials, methods and techniques and always seeking innovation - in every project: from the house in Bordeaux (the best project of the year 1998 according to Time magazine) to the new Chinese TV headquarters in Beijing -, Koolhaas has involved the artists that usually work with him in the organization of the exhibition. Tony Oursler proposes a multimedia installation called Junkspace; Jeff Preis has made an experimental film; and Candida Höfer presents the latest pictures of the Dutch embassy in Berlin. In March, the exhibition will be at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam (also designed by Koolhaas) before then continuing in other international venues.
