The city as a garden is the subject of the conference to be held tomorrow at the Cooper Union’s Wollman Auditorium, and talking about it will be two distinguished guests, the Spanish architects Iñaki Abalos and Juan Herreros. Based in Madrid, Abalos & Herreros are constantly searching for ways of designing timeless, “simple, universal, felicitous, cheap and intense architecture”. Their results can be seen in: a public library, a refuse recycling plant in Madrid, and a building for the Extremadura University in Mérida.

On the next day, Wednesday 12 November, a preview of the film “My Architects”, Louis I. Kahn’s posthumous biography, will be shown. Made by his son Nathaniel, who took five years to reconstruct his father’s tormented existence, the documentary recreates the vicissitudes of one of the leading architects of the 20th century, up till his dramatic death in 1974 in the men’s room at Penn Station, New York. By then alone and bankrupt, Kahn left three families: his official wife by whom he had a daughter, and two illegitimate children by long relationships with different women.
