Lacaton & Vassal, architecture beyond form

On its third stop after Bordeaux and Antwerp, the exhibition on the projects and constructions of the two French architects Anne Lacaton & Jean Philippe Vassal arrives at the Architektur Zentrum in Vienna. “Freeing oneself from the form - building from the inside outwards” is the motto that sums up the philosophy of this team; in practice, it means they prefer simple materials and focus on a differentiated treatment of spaces based on their social use. Having outlawed unnecessary aesthetic expectations, what remains is the essence.

Just a few rules, duly contained in all their works - from the Palais de Tokyo, the new temple of Parisian culture, where the intervention is minimal as to almost be imperceptible, to one-family prefabricated homes that mix materials and elements to produce intelligent spaces to high architectural standards.

“The space is more important, it’s the air, the atmosphere that counts”, they believe. The exhibition confirms this approach. No models, but anything that will project visitors directly into the place, e.g. snapshots or films. One obligatory stop along the exhibition route is the museum cafeteria - designed by Lacaton & Vassal.
