Gehry, Rogers and Wilkinson Eyre compete for Brighton

Frank Gehry, Richard Rogers and Wilkinson Eyre, the three teams competing to redesign the seafront at Hove in Sussex, have made public their schemes.

The aim of the competition is to design an avant garde sports centre in the King Alfred area (17,000 square metres) for which Brighton and Hove council have set aside 25-30 million pounds. Swimming pools, badminton courts, a 6 rink indoor bowls hall, 80 station gymnasium, workout studio, health suite, crèche and soft play area and a café. To complete the project, 400 apartments are to be built.

The intervention however does not find favour with local residents who maintain it is not compatible with the surrounding area and have set up the organisation “Seafront4All”.
