Diller + Scofidio: two exhibitions in Boston and New York

Two exhibitions, in Boston and New York, and a long list of important commissions, either already underway or on the horizon, go together to demonstrate the success of the New York architect team Diller + Scofidio. Ricardo Scofidio (aged 67) and Elizabeth Diller (aged 48) have been partners in both work and life since 1979. They were recently declared winners of – to name just a few – competitions for the new site for the Eyebeam Atelier in New York, a seafront project in Manhattan and the new ICA building in Boston. In 2002 they designed one of the symbols of the Swiss expo, the Blur building, made out of steam.

The exhibition at the ICA in Boston (until 27 April), is the first chance to see close up the design for the new museum which after being presented to the public last September is now about to go on site. A well articulated and comprehensive display which takes the visitor through the early conceptual phases of the project right up to the final model, including a video in which the architects talk about their ideas, an animated tour of the building and a series of materials which aim to show the relationship of the museum to its city context. The project for the new Institute of Contemporary Art is the first museum to be designed by the practice, as well as the first museum to be built in the city of Boston for a century. It is due to be completed by 2006.

In New York, a major retrospective is about to open (until 1 June), curated by Aaron Betsky and Michael Hays, which examines the team’s career. Organised by the Whitney Museum, it aims to highlight the link between art – installations, video, performance, computer – and architecture, which has always been very much part of the Diller + Scofidio philosophy. An act which by breaking down the confines of single disciplines, seeks, as underlined by the two architects, “tools which allow us to feel more at home, in a world which is becoming increasingly confused and artificial”.
