Paraná: opening of new museum by Oscar Niemeyer

Opened to the public at the end of November is Niemeyer’s ‘mushroom’ – alias the new museum of Paraná, the biggest museum complex in Latin America. It was built in record time – just five months – at a cost of just 40 million Real (13 million US dollars). It stands alongside another project by the 93 year old Brazilian architect – a school designed 35 years ago, a building 200m long and 30 wide on pilotis. Of the 30 000 square metres of floorspace, 15 300 will be given over to exhibition area.

For the opening, seven exhibitions have been set up, the largest of which presents 400 works by important Mexican artists. In the new museum Niemeyer has also designed a 400 seater auditorium, a meeting room to hold 70 people, atelier for carrying out restorations, workshops for crafts and painting, loading and unloading areas, storage areas for works, a café, a restaurant and relaxation areas.
