Foster approval for much debated Spitalfields project
Approval has been granted for the much discussed plans for Spitalfields in London which have been the subject of a great deal of protest from the local community prompting a number of alternative proposals from other architects. The council of Tower Hamlets put an end last Friday to fifteen years of controversy by granting planning permission for Foster’s Bishops Square project – 70 000 square metres of office space and 4000 of public space and services which will become the new offices for the Allen & Overy law firm whilst the existing market will be maintained in the Horner Market Buildings at the far eastern end of the site.
Comments from the head of the Spitalfields Development Group (SDG), Mike Bear, were positive, “… it integrates with Spitalfields existing architecture and, at the same time, will be the key to the regeneration of the area, bringing increased prosperity, more jobs and improving retail offer”.
