Almost as if he wished to subvert the present “impregnable fortress” aspect of the building, inaugurated at the beginning of the 1900s, Libeskind’s new structure-sculpture unites different prisms in a light and organic way. His objective is to transform this corner of Ontario’s capital into a luminous beacon. In the new structure the lion’s share of space will go to the public, thanks to the spectacular atrium in which the two themes of the museum - nature and culture - are showcased.
Bregman + Hamann Architects are the local partner of Libeskind, who is also involved with the ewpansion of two other museums, the Victoria & Albert in London and the Denver Art Museum in Denver. Work is set to begin in spring, 2003, for completion by 2006.
