Moving Landscapes. Inventing the Landscape

Is it possible to invent space? The answer to this fascinating question is offered by an exhibition organised by Lorenzo Benedetti and Marieke van Rooy which opens 29 January at the Galleria Sala 1 in Rome. Looking at the history of the Netherlands with its endless battles, one after the other without respite, we learn that the possibility does exist.

Struggling first against the sea and then to overcome problems within the space available (the population density is equal to that of Japan, the highest in Europe), the Dutch population has managed to radically transform the landscape. By means of continued experimentation they have managed to create infrastructures which are unique in the world, bringing together art and science to define and defend the natural surroundings.

The exhibition shows work from a number of architects (Monolab Architects and West 8), architectural theorists (Crimson) and artists (Rob Johannesma, Jeroen Kooijmans/Roy Cerpac, and Edwin Zwakman, offering a look into a world of design where art and architecture are brought increasingly closer together. And the incentive which brings them together is, once more, the contemporary landscape.
