A titanium "tornado" bursts from the ground and moves upward in a disorganized mass until the ceiling of the first floor. This is the latest sculpture-architecture by the volcanic Frank Gehry who does himself proud in Issey Miyake's new space, inaugurated October 19 in the New York district of TriBeCa.
"When I saw the empty space for the first time, I could think of asking no one, other than Frank Gehry. I did not ask him because I wanted someone to design an interior. I asked Frank because he is someone whose unique vision can capture and project the reflection of nature’s organic qualities onto a space. He is also someone whose work creates movement, light and energy". This is how the Japanese stylist recalls the bolt of lightning that began the new companionship, certainly not the first in our times between stylists and architects (read: Prada/Koolhaas and Armani/Ando).
The result is the new US headquarters of the "maison" Miyake, a three-storey space of 1200 square meters (12,967 sq. ft.) that unites under the same roof - a cast-iron construction from the late 1800s - a shop, offices and showroom. A place to begin and encourage new collaborations, laboratory and workshop at the same time. The work and technical aspects of the project fell to Gordon Kipping, a young Canadian professional. Study of the new co-ordinated image and trademark was, on the other hand, assigned to Neville Brody, the English graphic designer, with the specific aim of creating an image different from that of other stores.
