In the heart of Taipei’s Fujin Village comes an innovative solution for redefining urban spaces. Designed by Tanyi Huang and Tsaiher Cheng, TUBE RACK is a universal bicycle rack that recently won the prestigious 16th Taipei Design Award. Addressing the challenge of limited space on Taiwanese sidewalks, the module designed by the designers responds to the growing demand for efficient bicycle parking and urban seating. Indeed, its structure allows parking on one or both sides, offering a two-tier system that adapts to the changing needs of urban mobility.

The designers approached the congested streets of Fujin Village,seeking a solution to the urgent need for more open and accessible urban spaces. TUBE RACK would replace the area normally occupied by traditional car parking, creating space for eight bicycles, an additional area for motorcycles, wheelchair-accessible corners, and the possibility of planting a small tree. Its flexibility allows for strategic placement that accommodates both commercial interests and pedestrian flow, providing additional seating for customers or transforming into a play space for children during the day.

The sinuous lines within the structure create safe areas for rest, contributing to the fluidity and flexibility that characterize this project. According to the designers’ intentions, the installation of the urban module will not be limited to Fujin Village alone, extending to notable installations such as the Taipei Zoo Front Square, a collective urban bicycle park, and the MRT Exit Plaza, a meeting point enhanced by the presence of urban greenery.
