A new pedestrian ring to surround the Imperial Fora in Rome

The Italian capital is currently discussing the construction of a seven-kilometer pedestrian walkway around the heart of the city.

The possibility of implementing the already complicated road system through the construction of a seven-kilometer-long pedestrian route around the heart of the city, passing between the Imperial Forums, has been under discussion in the italian capital in recent days. The route is planned to start from Via dei Fori Imperiali and continue toward the Colosseum, passing through Via di San Gregorio until it reaches the Circus Maximus and Porta Capena. Here a circular route would then allow visitors and pilgrims to turn back onto Via dei Cerchi, take Via di San Teodoro, and arrive back at Via dei Fori thanks to a long route that invites visitors and pilgrims to delve into the world's most famous archaeological excavations.

Originating from an idea previously analyzed by former deputy mayor Walter Tocci, the project includes not only the new pedestrian ring but will also include the renovation of the Forums infopoint on Via del Fagutale, which will be expanded and have a new outdoor space, and that of Casina Vignola Boccapaduli, which will become a new central hub in November 2024.

At the moment, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano are in talks to arrive at a final decision in both economic and organizational terms. “It is an important project also in view of the opening of the Fori Imperiali-Colosseo metro C station, and therefore the need to offer services in that neuralgic area for tourism,” explains Superintendent Carlo Parisi Presicce.
