Maximo: Nardi’s new modular sofa blends style and sustainability

Designed by Raffaello Galiotto, Maximo addresses today’s needs while keeping an eye on the future.

“Maximo is more than just a sofa,” says Raffaello Galiotto, the designer behind Nardi’s products, in an interview with Domus. Known for his unique approach that merges artistic vision with industrial design, Galiotto highlights Maximo’s defining feature: modularity. The sofa can be arranged in endless solutions, thanks to components designed to connect in a functional way. “Its exceptional versatility makes it particularly ideal for the contract sector, where quick reconfigurations of seating arrangements – whether indoors or outdoors – are often essential,” he explains.

Modularity is central to Maximo’s design. Starting with a simple 80x80 cm armchair unit, you can create anything from a traditional sofa to an ottoman or a chaise longue. This adaptability makes it perfect for both residential and hospitality settings, where flexibility is key. The backrests and armrests attach using a simple and invisible system that preserves the sofa’s clean aesthetic while making it easy to adapt to any need. “The attachment mechanism isn’t aesthetically invasive,” Galiotto notes. “It doesn’t involve drilling or slots. This keeps the shape of the seat untouched; with just the push of a finger, two simple levers lock and unlock the components.”

The modular elements can be stacked, optimizing transportation and seasonal storage while minimizing space and packaging waste.

“The clean lines make Maximo a neutral yet distinctive piece of furniture,” Galiotto continues. “With various color options for both the frame and fabrics, it can be tailored to blend into any setting, from a backyard patio to the terrace of a luxury hotel. Maximo embodies a design philosophy that meets today’s needs while addressing future challenges of durability and sustainability.”

Nardi uses certified renewable energy sources and recyclable materials that guarantee durable and sustainable furniture. Maximo’s frame, for instance, is made of regenerated resin as part of the company’s Regeneration program. The fabrics are designed to withstand intensive use and exposure to the elements, while the deep and comfortable seats feature self-centering polyurethane foam cushions covered with a dual-layer cover: one with Water Repellent treatment and the other in breathable fabric.

The Sunbrella® fabric, made with mass dyed acrylic fiber free of PFAS chemicals, is resistant to moisture, water-repellent, and durable. This makes Maximo well-suited for environments with high humidity or frequent temperature fluctuations.

In a world increasingly mindful of sustainability, Maximo stands out as a responsible choice for both indoor and outdoor spaces, combining comfort and style. It invites us to design spaces that are not only welcoming but also ethical and sustainable.
