The first iPhone SE, introduced in March 2016, was sort of an anomaly in the evolution of the iPhone line. A year and a half after the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, with new larger form factors, Apple decided to revive the iPhone 5S design in a new model with the upgraded specs of the iPhone 6S.
The iPhone SE was by all measure a success: it cost less and appealed to a crowd that was still looking for a smaller but powerful phone.
Four years later, and Apple is ready to repurpose that same strategy. iPhones got even bigger and thicker, but the smaller design from the iPhone 8, albeit looking a bit dated, is still very much appreciated by those who are looking for a smaller form factor and a much more pocketable iPhone. It means the cycle aligned properly for an iPhone SE 2, which will unsurprisingly look like an update iPhone 8, and that's why some analysts say it could be named “iPhone 9”. While the first iPhone SE was mostly indistinguishable from an iPhone 5S, the iPhone SE 2 will probably use a different material for the back of the Phone. The specs will be in line with those of recent iPhones, with an A13 chip, 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage on the entry level model.
The iPhone SE 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but rumors are swirling fast and they definitely verge on the side of 100% credibility. OnLeaks, a famous leaker who correctly predicted the iPhone 11 Pro’s design 9 months in advance, has worked with iGeeksblog on a rendering showing how the new iPhone SE 2 will look like. If it doesn’t look impressive, it’s because it’s designed not to be: what’s important is that this phone will probably start at $399 while packing good enough specs to turn it into upgrade material for millions of users in the world who are still on an older model and waiting for the right cheap iPhone to upgrade.
The launch of iPhone SE was expected for the end of March, but it’s unclear whether the current Coronavirus epidemic has forced Apple to shift the introduction date forward into April or May.
iPhone SE2 will look like old iPhones, but still sell like hotcakes
Apple is going to pull off the same strategy behind the success of the original iPhone SE, as it prepares to launch a new phone with an old design but better specs.
