It has been twenty years since the internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, at the request of then-artistic director Marc Jacobs, reinterpreted the Louis Vuitton monogram, marking the beginning of a multi-year creative partnership that immersed the Maison into Murakami’s "Superflat" universe and bringing it closer to the world of contemporary art. Since then, his figures inspired by Japanese tradition and the otaku and kawaii subculture have become part of the brand's history and pop culture, with collections such as Monogram Multicolor, Cherry Blossom and Eye Love Monogram where cartoon eyes, smiling flowers or Pandas embellished bags and accessories, revisiting the brand's classic aesthetic.
To celebrate the 2025 re-edition of the original Louis Vuitton x Murakami collection, Milan will host a special initiative. From today until January 28, two historic trams from 1920 will be entirely transformed in Murakami’s style to reflect and showcase the spirit of this renewed collaboration. Departing from Piazza Castello and Piazza Fontana, the two trams will offer different immersive experiences: the Louis Vuitton Cafe Tram will be turned into a literary café in shades of pink and the kaleidoscopic Monogram Multicolor, while the Louis Vuitton Cinema Tram, with its electric blue interior, will become a travelling cinema screening multimedia content produced by Murakami for the Maison.
