Marsèll wraps Frederik Fialin's Calypso Light in leather

The Danish designer's lamp meets Italian fashion in a new super limited edition version.

The Danish designer and craftsman Frederik Fialin, long interested in exploring the relationship between art and industrial design by creating objects that dissolve the clear boundary between functional furniture and works of art, partnered with the Italian footwear and accessories brand Marsèll to reinterpret his Calypso Light lamp. The piece was first showcased during Berlin Art Week 2024, as part of the group exhibition Everyday Exquisite curated by Julian Bächle.

The five leather-clad versions of the Calypso handcrafted for the flagship store on Via Spiga in Milan – three floor lamps and two large pendant lamps – represent a point of convergence between the worlds of design and craftsmanship, expressing an aesthetic and material blend that unites both Marsèll and Fialin’s research. The use of leather as a lampshade, in addition to creating a matte, paint-like effect, “offers a new perspective on this material”, explained the designer, “a material commonly used in footwear, but rare in this context”, representing an absolute novelty and a challenging opportunity for Studio Frederik Fialin.
