With vibrant hues and eclectic neo-pop art references, POP&ROLL, by Hungarian artist Miklós Kiss, invites passersby in Budapest to step inside an immersive art gallery and store that also serves as a public toilet. The walls, furnishings, and each of the 20 toilets serve as canvases displaying around a hundred artworks, featuring images inspired by the pixel gaming world of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
POP&ROLL comprises three distinct spaces: the Art Gallery, the Art Shop, and the Art Toilet, offering an accessible and enjoyable way to engage with the world of contemporary art. The bathroom, in particular, is a multisensory immersion, complete with sound design and fragrances. The music follows the world of an imaginary video game, as if one were traversing a battle scene in a dungeon leading to final victory. Goldenroaches and Emograms, created as NFT images, are scattered throughout the exhibition. The faces of the figures are composed of letters, expressing emotions and thoughts.
