IKEA is venturing into a new smart home category by launching three affordable IoT sensors that detect motion or water leakage: Parasoll, Vallhorn, and Badring.
Parasoll is designed for discreet installation on windows and doors. The sensor detects motion and notifies users when the points are opened or closed.
Vallhorn is a wireless motion sensor. It can be installed indoors or outdoors and activate lights upon detecting movements. Smart lights can be turned on with specific pre-programmed characteristics such as intensity and color that can be customized.
Last but not least, the Badring water leakage sensor can help users prevent water damage. The sensor can be placed near areas of water usage, such as the laundry room or bathroom floor. It activates upon sensing water presence, sending a mobile notification, or activating its built-in alarm.
“At IKEA, we want to make smarter living simpler and more convenient for everyone,” says David Granath, Range Manager at IKEA of Sweden.
“Our new sensors merge technology with our home furnishing expertise, to provide affordable solutions that elevate everyday moments at home”.
The three devices are based on the Zigbee Software and can be installed as standalone devices that users can control through IKEA’s Home app. They work best when paired with the company’s smart home hub Dirigera, though, letting users program them in a more complex way to interact with other Matter-compatible smart home devices from IKEA or other providers.
The three smart sensors are nothing new in the already crowded market of smart home IoT devices. Yet, Ikea throwing its weight behind home sensing devices is still a development worth noticing as it might seriously convince tech-unsavvy users to try out a product category that they would have otherwise ignored, especially considering that each unit will cost less than €10.
Parasoll and Vallhorn will start selling in IKEA stores worldwide from January 2024. Badring will follow in April 2024.
Parasoll and Badring will cost €9,99, while Vallhorn will be available for €7.99. US Prices have not yet been announced, but will probably stay below $10 as well.
