Prada to design new space suits for NASA’s missions to the moon

Greater lightness, flexibility and protection to facilitate space exploration of Earth’s satellite, the first since Apollo 17, that happened more than 50 years ago.

Fashion has drawn inspiration from space since the 1960s, but this time fashion inspires space. Prada, in collaboration with Axiom Space, the US commercial aerospace company that has recently signed an agreement with ESA, will create the new spacesuits for NASA’s Artemis missions, specifically Artemis III, scheduled for 2025, marking the first lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Prada will primarily focus on the outer layer of the spacesuit. Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space, mentioned the intention to leverage Prada’s expertise in composite materials for the chest and pants components, making them much lighter and improving astronaut mobility.

Building on the design of NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit, new Axiom Space’s spacesuits aim to offer increased flexibility, protection, and specialized tools to meet the needs of space exploration.
