The building’s façade, until recently, was covered with graffiti that paid homage to the artist, as well as messages and tags from his contemporaries. Unfortunately, however, the walls were recently cleaned.
The Brooklyn artist was a central figure in the Downtown scene of the 1970s and 1980s, questioning conventional values and stereotypes with his art. In the early 1980s, he became a friend and collaborator of Andy Warhol, with whom he created several works. It was Warhol who rented him the apartment on Great Jones Street, and many of his famous Neo-expressionist works were created within it. Basquiat died in that same space at the age of 27, due to a heroin overdose.
