Eagle + West complex – designed by OMA – is the latest addition to the Brooklyn waterfront, in the neighborhood of Greenpoint, where it marksthe threshold with Queens. The two towers that are part of it are accompanied by a smaller building (seven stories) and are surrounded by a new waterfront landscaping by James Corner Field Operations. The project adds 600,000 square feet of housing — with 745 total units both market-rate and affordable – and 30,000 square feet of new public space.
The team at OMA shaped the towers expanding and contracting their forms for maximum efficiency. The forty-story tower widens as it rises, while the thirty-story one widens toward the ground.
Inclined panels alternate their orientation block by block, giving dynamism to the facade and reacting differently to the movement of the sun. A bridge between the rooftop terraces links the two towers, looking over the Manhattan skyline.
