Opened in 1971 to house the state’s offices, the Boston Government Services Center is one of the most famous US brutalist buildings. Nevertheless, it was never completed and has fallen into disrepair due to lack of maintenance.

The state government proposed to redevelop it renovating and expanding the existing structure by adding on the top of the Hurley Building – which is part of the complex – a residential tower containing 200 residential units and another tower containing laboratories, both designed by architecture studio NBBJ.

The value of the life-sciences structure should help offset the restoration costs. New York architecture studio Beyer Blinder Belle has been selected to renovate the existing six-story of the concrete structure. The Boston Government Services Center includes two other buildings that surround a triangular plaza, which will undergo significant renovations by landscape architecture studio Mikyoung Kim Design. However, the other buildings will not be involved in the renovation. The project is now undergoing regulatory review and the state aims to begin construction works in 2025.
