It seems like a utopian idea, but it’s not: Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, has revealed the plan for a 7,466-hectare ‘Bitcoin City’, which will be built in the Southeast of the Central American country. In November of this year, the architect Fernando Romero, of FR-EE, has shared at a bitcoin event the first images of the city, based on a 2012 concept.

Perfectly circular, as a coin, the city designed by FR-EE will get the necessary power to mining bitcoin from the geothermal energy of Conchagua volcano, in El Salvador.

Shaped as a perfect circle, the masterplan represent a coin and features a large central plaza emblazoned with a massive ‘B’, which obviously stands for “Bitcoin”. The city will be developed at the base of Conchagua volcano, which plays a key role in the project. Thanks to its geothermal power, in fact, it will provide of energy the whole power grid of the city, besides making possibile the mining of the cryptocurrency.
Romero said “the citizen is the central focus in the design of bitcoin city”. In fact, there will be numerous pedestrian areas and cycle lanes on every street. Besides the residential units the city will includes health and educational facilities, as well as retail spaces and digital amenities like NFT (Non-Fungible Token) galleries.
