German startup Carbon Mobile has launched the second iteration of its carbon fibre smartphone. Thanks to a monocoque design, The Carbon 1 MK II weighs only 125g (that's 30% less than your average 2021 smartphone). The phone is manufactured with less than 5% plastic, thanks to an innovative and patented Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Material (HyRECM). It's a type of carbon fibre that isn't just lightweight and ultra-resistant but also radio-transparent, bypassing the very obstacle that so far made carbon fibre unsuitable for developing telecommunication devices.
To shape the Carbon 1 MK II, the company's designers drew inspiration from Bauhaus design principles. They achieved a "form" that follows "the function" and stays true to the material's properties.
Despite the designer's best efforts, though, the Carbon 1 MK II looks just like any other phone, except for the typical carbon fibre look and feel. A phone's design, though, does not end at its aesthetics or shape: the fact that this smartphone weighs 125g is contributing to the general design feel and the overall experience of the product. That said, the premise here is fascinating, but the product's premium pricing is misaligned with the current smartphone market. 799€ nowadays get you a top-notch powerful flagship device with astounding cameras, not just an average phone whose main selling point is the innovative material it's made of.
