The new car-free Ikea store in the centre of Vienna

The brand defines it as “the most innovative” among its centers, certainly marks a change of direction and a rethinking of a purchasing experience that has made homologation its success.

Ikea looks to the future in its store that will open in 2021, in the centre of Vienna. Starting from a study that records a radical change in purchasing behaviour, the maxi-store will be a seven-storey building, each floor measuring 3,000 sqm, just a few metres from the Westbahnhof station. The store will have no parking spaces, but logistics that will guarantee home delivery within 24 hours. The shop will be explicitly green, with 160 trees on the sides of the facade, and will host various leisure areas that can be used independently from the visit to the store: a bar, a restaurant, a hotel, a bakery and a pharmacy. On the roof, the project includes a large terrace open to the public, even beyond the working hours, when purchases are possible. Ikea in Westbahnhof is intended to become the meeting point for the entire creative district.
