Drawing a song: the workshop by Ciao. Dsicoteca italiana and apple

How does a poster come to life? We found out (and tried it out) with two professionals at the Apple Store in Milan.

On the occasion of Milan Music Week, Apple invited Domus to take part in a workshop held in the Piazza Liberty building designed by Foster + Partners. The event was led by the founders of Ciao. Discoteca Italiana, a collective that combines music and graphic design with politics to create colourful posters that superimpose minimalist illustrations on the most famous verses of Italian songs.

During the first part of the event, Andrea Nissim and Giulio La Ferrara, founders of the collective, told the audience their story, starting from the time when the famous posters were used to advertise on the streets of Turin an evening in which they participated as DJs. Through the story, they shared the creative process that gave rise to the products that, over the years, have also ended up on the walls of many homes.

The second part of the activity involved the participants in a creative experience: starting with the song Summer on a Solitary Beach by Franco Battiato, which they listened to via Apple Music, the participants chose a phrase from the lyrics that they found particularly meaningful. They then used iPads and Apple Pencils to create their own poster, visually reinterpreting the song's message.

Using Adobe's Procreate app, designed specifically for illustrators and artists, each participant was able to try their hand at creating their own poster. At the end of the meeting, some of the works were shared and commented on in a sharing atmosphere.
