Three symbols of Milanese architecture, one new sound: now happening at Terraforma Exo

Gio Ponti’s Torre Branca, Burri’s Teatro Continuo and the Biblioteca al Parco: international sounds and Italian architecture meet at Terraforma Exo on June 15 and 16 in Milan’s Parco Sempione.

For the first time in ten years, the Terraforma Festival is changing its home (and name)

Terraforma Exo, a new cultural project by the creative agency Threes Productions, will debut in Milan’s Parco Sempione on June 15 and 16.

This project brings a wide range of concerts, installations, discussions and sound walks to the very center of the city. Set against the backdrop of Parco Sempione’s ecosystem, the event will enter into a dialogue with the park’s iconic architecture. At the heart of the program is the renowned Triennale Milano, an institution with a rich legacy dating back to 1923, serving as a respected hub for modern and contemporary art, design, architecture and cultural discourse on a national and international level.

True to its tradition, Terraforma Exo embodies a precisely curated vision, anchored this year in the concept of “soundscape.” This thematic exploration delves into the transformative potential of sound, interpreting and reshaping space while promoting new modes of human-environment coexistence. The program will unfold in various architectural landmarks in Parco Sempione and adjacent to the Triennale Milano. Notable venues include Alberto Burri’s Teatro Continuo, a groundbreaking public work conceived in 1973 to extend the boundaries of theatrical space into the urban fabric. Also featured are the Biblioteca al Parco, built in 1954 as the “living pavilion” during the 10th Triennale, and the iconic Torre Branca. Designed by Gio Ponti, this architectural marvel is revered not only as a true masterpiece, but also as an architectural “challenge.”

These illustrious landmarks of Italian architectural heritage, along with the venues of the Triennale Milano, will play host to a series of artistic luminaries from different disciplines and scenes. Among them, Kembra Pfahler, an icon of the New York punk scene, will grace the stage of the Garden of Triennale Milano with her new performance “Availabism,” in collaboration with the London-based organization CIRCA. Afterwards, computer music virtuoso Robert Henke will offer a live performance entitled “CBM 8032 AV Project,” a multimedia exploration of the aesthetics of elementary graphics and sounds using iconic computers from the 1980s.

The program also includes sound installations such as “Ultimo Cielo,” a site-specific sonorization by Caterina Barbieri designed for the Torre Branca, and the Acousmonium Audior, a sound spatialization system and epitome of acoustics and design created by Eraldo Bocca. In addition, open-air activities and conferences will take place in the Biblioteca al Parco, featuring a lecture by the Portuguese researcher and curator Margarida Mendes, dedicated to the exploration of the sound ecosystem of rivers. The program also includes the conference “Resonance, Ecologies and Ways of Listening” by renowned British musician and theorist David Toop, which will serve as the opening event on Saturday morning in the Salone d’Onore of the Triennale Milano.

As always, Terraforma Exo serves as a platform for encounters and exchanges, prompting reflections on the interplay between ourselves, the sonic landscapes we inhabit, and the environment around us. It encourages experimentation and new approaches to coexistence and connectivity. With its adaptive and utopian ethos, Terraforma Exo – especially this year – dynamically integrates and evolves within new territories, embodying a living organism rather than adhering to a “static” and “extractive” model of cultural events. It actively contributes to the creation or re-creation of cultural landscapes within the urban fabric of Milan and beyond.
