On Monday, November 29th, the metropolitan council has approved the Biciplan "Cambio" project, a 250 million euros maxi plan to create a system of cycle paths of 750 kilometers circa between the main city of Lombardy and its hinterland.
The project includes 24 cycle lines: 4 circular, 16 radial and 4 "greenways", super-fast lines that allow to cross the territory from North to South and from East to West. Some existing routes – such as the cycle paths along the Villoresi canal and Navigli – will be connected to the rest of the network, while others will be built from scratch.
According to the plan, the 80% of services – such as schools, hospitals, companies and interchanges with railway and underground lines – will be located no more than 1 km away from at least one line, in order to offer widespread territorial coverage.
The goal is to reduce the use of cars. Metropolitan City estimates to be able to increase the number of bicycle movements, reaching at least 20% of total trips and 10% of intercommunal trips. The plan is expected to be completed by 2035.
