NY. A sweet playground for Domino park

Where once stood Domino Sugar Refinery, a landmark of the 19^th century New York, Mark Reigelman II completed a playground that reinterprets the sugar manufacturing process. The intervention is part of a larger redevelopment plan of approximately 24,000 sqm conducted by James Field operations, known for its work on the High Line with Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Piet Oudolf.

Domino park opened on June 10, 2018, on the site once occupied by Domino Sugar refinery, the world’s biggest sugar industry, giving this piece of waterfront back to Williamsburg neighbourhood, Brooklyn. American artist Mark Reigelman II’s playground, commonly referred to as Sweetwater, occupies a central position in Domino park.

  His work revolves around the reinterpretation of the sugar manufacturing process, and embarks the visitors of the park in a three-stage journey through Sugarcane Cabin, Sweetwater Silo and Sugar Cube Centrifuge. These three elements are built with a steel structure and wrapped in pastel-colour perforated metal sheets, connected by nets, tubes and slides where, in the words of the artist, “kids will be chopped and discarded from an industrial cabin, filtered into sweet water syrup, and emerge as perfectly refined raw sugar.”
