Houseship VC

The houseship designed by Dutch studio ANA architecten transformed a Belgian Kempenaar ship into a comfortable, light-flooded house with wide views on Amsterdam’s canals.

In the water plots of the IJburg neighborhood, in the eastern part of Amsterdam, ANA architecten transformed a Belgian Kempenaar motor ship dated 1957 into a residential houseship. Spatiality, high quality of living and sustainability formed the starting point for the design. The client wanted a place that could be spacious and comfortable at the same time.

Sight lines run over the entire length of the ship and there are views across the different floors. These lines of sight were created by a terrace that was hung in the middle of the 4.5 meter high space. In addition windows in the wheelhouse, portholes and a patio provide more light and sightlines. A concrete floor and white walls enhance the simplicity of the design, with oak wood multifunctional furniture that connects the different spaces.

The master bedroom is designed as an independent living space. It contains a pantry, bathroom, toilet, and sitting area. The kitchen is the central space in the ship and serves the main living area. There is no traditional living room, but there are several places on the ship where you can retreat or get together. The children’s bedrooms are small and functional, and designed as passenger cabins. They are open to the hall through a large sliding door.
