Space Caviar: RAM House

#116 A large domestic prototype in the courtyard of Palazzo Clerici explores the possibilities of cohabiting with technology instead of enduring it. #salone2015

Designed by Space Caviar (Joseph Grima and Tamar Shafrir) and produced by Prokoss-Mobilrot in Alto Adige, the RAM House is a domestic prototype exploring the concept of privacy in the age of sentient appliances and signal-based communications.

Today’s home is filled with “intelligent” devices that monitor the surroundings whereas the shell – its outer protective shield – becomes irrelevant.

The house is watching us. In response to this, the RAM House offers a space of selective electromagnetic autonomy. Wi-Fi, cellphone and other radio signals are filtered by screens (yellow) of radar-absorbing materials (RAM) and Faraday meshing that prevent signals entering and exiting. Panels can be slid open/closed to allow radio waves to enter or leave. The RAM House explores the possibility of cohabiting with technology rather than passively enduring its constant presence.
