Japanese studio Schemata Architects has designed a new shop for Spanish handmade candy brand Papabubble, the first one to open at a major department store in Tokyo, Japan.

Papabubble's candies are famous for their impressive artistic patterns and colours, which prompted the architects to show customers the entire process of candy making. "We designed a large counter where they do all works such as melting sugar, making patterns, cutting, wrapping and selling," state Schemata Architects.

The backyard area, storage and working counter were enveloped with glass so that customers can look over the entire shop. The counter is made of concrete cast into a fabric mould, a gesture which intends to allow customers to experience a usually deemed "cold" material in a soft way.

"In the same way," the architects point out, "we want customers to fully enjoy the Papabubble magic by visually experiencing their intricate making process, and see how sugar magically turns into such beautiful candies."
