Four new Ikea collections (and many new names) at Milano Design Week 2022

“We were looking for a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making people want to spend time at home”: Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis is one of the representative new creative figures Ikea has thought of to develop four new collections standing as icons of its near future, all to be presented at Milan Design Week 2022. Marcelis has developed the two Varmblixt LED wall lamps, a collection inspired by the utmost versatility but also by combining a sculptural character with an emotional mission: “My inspiration comes from the perception of moments in nature”, says the designer, “and that ephemeral interaction between light and natural elements is what I have tried to capture”.

“Supporting the creation and performance of music, but also simply putting people in the right mood”: perhaps the most surprising name in Ikea's roster of new guests is Swedish House Mafia, who have combined their experience in music production and DJing with the brand's humanistic vision to create Obegränsad, “limitless” in Swedish. A desk, an armchair and a turntable are composing a system of versatile solutions for producers, DJs and musicians who want to create a workstation at home, but also for those who simply like to enjoy music at home. 

The new collections will all be launched between this autumn and the spring of 2023, and they are all united by the same spirit, of bringing different worlds together in what will be less and less a catalogue of trends and more and more a catalogue of experiences. Two other collaborations are on the way: one with Marimekko, Bastua, based on the Nordic sauna culture, a first element of which is being previewed at Fuorisalone, a recycled polyester shower curtain with a pattern inspired by rhubarb leaves. Completing the group is the Ömsesidig collection, developed in collaboration with nine Latin American creatives to celebrate forthcoming openings in new countries including Chile, Colombia and Peru.
