Bank of England economist Sandra Batten talks about the impacts of climate change on cities at domusforum 2019. “On one hand, agglomeration produces economic development, concentration of people promotes the exchange of ideas and drives productivity’s growth. On the other hand, the concentration of people, economic activities and assets in city, make cities vulnerable to the consequences of climate change” she states. Cities can respond to climate change through two main forms of actions: mitigation and adaptation. Sandra Batten explains: “Mitigation is related to the effort to decrease carbon emissions, and technology, investments and policies can help. Adaptation reflects the ability of cities to protect the citizens against the effects of climate change”.
