Saskia Sassen: “The city is one of the few places that those without power get to make a history”

At “domusforum 2018: The future of cities”, the sociologist discussed the potential for all rungs of society to make a mark on local culture and economy in the city.

“A city is a complex and incomplete system, and in that incompleteness lies the capacity for cities to have very long lives,” says Saskia Sassen. “And when you look at time, the urban space that is there, includes the urban space of the poor of course of the rich [too]... but also of the poor.”

domusforum is a new cultural platform launched by Editoriale Domus to look at the impact of architecture, design and technologies on the urban environment. The first event focussing on the future of the city took place at the Franco Parenti Theatre in Milan on 11 October 2018. Among the speakers were Domus Editor in Chief Michele De Lucchi, Egyptian heritage advisor Fathi Saleh, and advocate for a politically and economically united Africa, Samia Nkrumah.
