The first instalment of domusforum, "The Future of Cities", will discuss the complexity of cities regarding architecture, economy, social sciences and citizens' emotions. The analysis is based on a survey commissioned by Domus and executed by Nielsen, one of the best-known companies for the gathering and measuring of consumer data. The survey was conducted from May to July 2018 according to three phases: qualitative interviews (phase 1), quantitative questionnaires (phase 2) and the analysis of discussions found on social networks (phase 3).
A survey on the future of cities
For the first instalment of domusforum, international experts will discuss the results of a survey conducted by the Nielsen company for Domus on the complexity of our cities.
The biggest problem in cities today, and for the next decade, will be iniquity, which means unequal development of the cities – Rahul Mehrotra
Phase 1. Qualitative interviews were conducted with six experts in urban dynamics: Anna Lazzarini, an expert in urban practices and spaces who teaches moral philosophy at the International University of Languages and Media in Milan; Rahul Mehrotra, an architect and urban planner who teaches at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Giuseppe Russo, an economist and the director of the Luigi Einaudi research and documentation centre in Turin; Anna Scheuermann, an architect and the curator of the 2016 German pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale; Jeff Speck, a city planner from the Boston area; and Serena Vicari, who teaches environmental sociology at the University of Milano-Bicocca.
Phase 2. Quantitative questionnaires were answered by a sample of 1,500 individuals belonging to the population of five different cities: Chicago, London, Milan, São Paulo and Shanghai.
Phase 3. An analysis was made of discussions on social networks containing references to the needs, opinions and expectations of citizens in the five selected cities.
In order to prepare their speeches, the domusforum speakers are already in possession of the survey results, the important points of which will be presented on 11 October at the start of the conference. Substantial parts of the study will be published in the November issue of Domus in a special edition about the first domusforum event.
