In Amsterdam, the Stedelijk Museum, one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in the Netherlands, celebrates its 125th anniversary with an exhibition dedicated to its historic design collection..
Through an exhibition of more than 300 classic design pieces, witnessing the avant-garde and innovation, visitors are given the opportunity to explore the history of international design, starting with one of the oldest pieces in the collection: the historic Thonet bench from 1848, a symbol of the great tradition of the German brand.
“They continue to be very popular products with a sober and strong identity that has allowed them to become part of the collective consciousness, becoming true family cultural assets,” says the curator of the exhibition, Ingeborg de Roode. “Thonet products have also been a source of inspiration for many designers and continue to attract the interest and enthusiasm of many people - as the exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum is proving.”
Other sections of the museum exhibit not only historical pieces but also many contemporary products: from the famous designs of the Wiener Werkstätte and the Amsterdam School to the Scandinavian design and models of the 1960s; from the colorful Italian Memphis drawings of the 1980s to the models of the Dutch Design movement that emerged in the 1990s.
