Exedra, a collective seat to enhance participation in the museum’s life

Commissioned for the educational program of the museum La Capella in Barcelona, the movable seat is designed as a device to make the enjoyment of works of art inclusive.

Designed by the architect and designer Lluís Alexandre Casanovas Blanco at the invitation of Jordi Ferreiro, artist and educator of La Capella in Barcelona, Exedra is a collective seat designed to bring the museum's heterogeneous public closer to the works of art, breaking the segregation that generally characterizes educational programs, which don’t dispose of a dedicated infrastructure or are held in separated rooms, away from the artworks.

Conceived as a mobile stand to be transported in front of the different pieces of art according to the needs of each event, Exedra consists of two symmetrical structures to be composed as an amphitheatre, enhancing intimacy among the participants. The heart shape of the steel structure is inspired by furnishing typologies such as the Victorian sofa or the Acapulco chair, while the size of the steps favours a slightly reclined posture, an invitation to informal and relaxed discussion.
