Atic Aribau is located on the top floor of a building overlooking one of the emblematic chamfers of Cerdà’s Ensanche in Barcelona.
The project by Raúl Sánchez Architects involved the demolition of all the partition walls, with the exception of the system of load-bearing walls parallel to the facade, which is typical of these corner blocks.
An oak-panelled partition is placed perpendicularly to the street front, and under the guise of an inner facade, organizes the living space becoming a container element of the bedroom, a walk-in closet, the entrance vestibule, an equipped wall and the study.
The careful use of materials recreates a complex balance within the white, light-flooded attic envelope, defining its thresholds and the fluid division of spaces. The oak wood covering the distribution wall and the lighter shade used in the rooms contrast with the palette of greys and pink of the microcement flooring, while a carpet of hexagonal tiles – the original floor cladding of the house – runs the entire length of the bevelled facade giving it unity of composition, despite a pivoting door marks the division between the sleeping and the living area.
Natural granite, brushed copper handles and fittings, pivoting doors in lacquered wood with brass blades and glazed surfaces become precious inlays within a single enviroment. Playfulness is added through a swing placed in the open space kitchen.
Swings and curved walls in a renovated penthouse in Barcelona
Horizontal and vertical planes of wood, glass and granite and continuous surfaces of microcement define the fluid division of the interiors renovated by Raúl Sánchez in Barcelona.
