On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of his death, the Louis Vuitton Foundation inaugurates in Paris the largest monograph ever dedicated to a cult figure of the 20th century design, Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999).
Curated by Jacques Barsac, Sébastien Cherruet, Gladys Fabre, Sébastien Gokalp and Perriand’s own daughter, Pernette Perriand-Barsac, the exhibition enlights again her pioneering role in the Modern Movement.
The originality of the intuitions – the functionality of the minimum spaces, the modularity of the furnishings, the opportunities of the prefabricated – is underlined, and the decisive contribution, for a long time concealed, to the authorship of iconic projects – the LC2 armchair and the LC4 tilting chaise longue, among the others – conceived over the years at Le Corbusier’s studio – is remembered once again.
Charlotte Perriand, pioneer of modernity
A great exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton celebrates the role of pioneer and the libertarian inspiration of the French designer Charlotte Perriand.

A key figure in the dialogue between material cultures, first and foremost the Japanese one, an architect who was involved in the problems of reconstruction and social housing and, at the same time, a mountaineer interested in a new ecology between construction and nature, Perriand was a tireless promoter of the synthesis between the arts.
The exhibition has the merit of restoring this sensitivity, setting up Perriand’s works alongside works by Léger, Picasso, Laurens and Le Corbusier, in an ideal conversation between personalities capable of restoring the intriguing fresco of an era.
On display, unpublished reproductions of her projects, including the interiors of the Salon d’Automne (1929) and some of the furnishings of the Maison du Jeune Homme (1935), created in collaboration with Cassina, offer the opportunity to explore the ideals and solutions of her highly personal art of living.
