These are the questions that the exhibition “Bauhaus #itsalldesign” wants to answer, taking into consideration every aspect of the school's activities and considering the influences that have lasted well beyond its mere 14 years of life.
The exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, and was developed by the Vitra Design Museum and the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany.
On display are known but also unpublished works that span design, architecture, art, cinema, photography, theatre design and advertising: both from the past and from the present. All signed by important names such as Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, Lyonel Feininger, Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Lord Norman Foster, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius and Enzo Mari. A comparison between different generations that underlines how the Bauhaus designers' interest in social processes and design methods is extremely topical and reflects their determination to use design as a means of creating a structure for living: objects had to have social objectives and not just be beautiful.
In the workshops dedicated to the students, the Bauhaus school stimulated experimentation to reach solutions that respected this principle. For this reason, the exhibition highlights how the principles on which Bauhaus was based are also the basis of contemporary design. And it underlines how most design schools still work according to their educational principles today.
The exhibition is also hosting Bauhaus-inspired events and workshops in a variety of fields, from theatre performances to conferences and workshops.
Bauhaus’ lasting legacy on design education
