From 12 March to 16 May in the Coachella Valley desert, in Southern California, takes place the third edition of the international art exhibition Desert X, curated by artistic director Neville Wakefield and co-curator César García-Alvarez. For the 2021 edition, Desert X commissioned thirteen new installations to artists from eight countries. The exhibition explores the desert “as a place and an idea”, focusing on the history of the people inhabiting it as well as the political, social, and cultural context that generates their memories. Installations include Xaviera Simmons’ eloquent billboards, Nicholas Galanin’s “Indian Land”, a provocative reference to the well-known Hollywood sign, and Eduardo Sarabia’s impressive installation, realized using traditional Mexican petates. The exhibition will feature a series of public and education programs. Also, a film produced by Desert X in collaboration with sponsor Richard Mille will soon be released. Desert X is produced by The Desert Biennial, a charitable organization that operates to activate the desert by commissioning site-specific installations to internationally recognized artists. Desert X is entirely free and open to the public.
