What is Modest Fashion? It is a new trend, the son of last decade: it is a covering clothing, a sophisticated style without necklines or mini-fabrics. A millionaire industry, this fashion trend has been inspired by the Islamic culture, which has become a powerful new buyer; buti is also weared among those who choose it for spiritual, religious or personal reasons.
Contemporary Muslim Fashions, at the Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, will be the first exhibition to showcase on the rise of this phenomenon. On view, are about 80 ensembles designed by established and emerging designers from the world of high fashion, streetwear, sportswear and couture, as well as 40 photographs related to the collections. Also important are the videos documenting a new generation of fashion designers, most of which are Muslim and under 40 women. The exhibition is a journey in search of the Islamic women’s new identity and the way they’re dressing. A real photograph of current reality.
