The domestic monumentality of a residential complex in Mexico City

The Carrizal residential complex is located south of Mexico City on an irregularly shaped lot characterized by the pre-existence of large trees that influenced the design of the housing grid. The lot is cut into two symmetrical parts, one facing northwest, the other southeast, by an internal path that acts as distibutive axis for the entrance to the eight residences and double access to the streets. The rigorous, symmetrical layout of the complex, made up of pure, compact volumes, is made domestic by the significant presence of the gardens and courtyards and the vibrant combination of three materials with contrasting textures and colours: wood, perforated brick and cement. 

Moving away from the usual scheme of housing attached to homes, the designers propose a typological variation of residences, conceived as a complex of 3-storey patio houses and a careful study of the interiors, characterised by generous spaces and natural materials in the finishes. The living areas on the ground floor are all characterised by a double transparent view of the courtyards which guarantees a sense of openness and wide views of the common areas; the bedrooms are located on the first and second floors, while the rooftop areas have large terraces.
