From disused tanks to an art centre: a model of Urban Cultural Institution in Shanghai

Open Architecture's Thank Shanghai project is a centre for contemporary art open to different and boundless uses, capable of blending art with nature and people.

The duo industrial archaeology and contemporary art is a sound experiment that has always given positive and virtuous results on a global level.  In Shanghai this theme is further declined in an urban redevelopment project on the area of the former Longhua airport, where visitors can move freely between the city, nature and art.

A large urban park with an almost lunar appearance houses a myriad of scattered art installations, a stepped water square, a system of indoor public spaces, an urban forest and public access to the Huangpu River that runs through it, in addition to the five aviation fuel tanks turned into contemporary art pavilions.

At the heart of the project is the fusion of architecture and landscape through a "Super-Surface", a 5-hectare green walkable green mantle that connects the five tanks through underground paths and spaces.

Each tank retains its original industrial aesthetic and is designed according to the museum and recreational spaces it houses. Circular openings and portholes have been cut out in the tanks to allow visitors to observe the surrounding landscape and natural light to enter.
