In the Alpine municipality of Madesimo, in Valchiavenna, the architecture studio ESarch renovated a rural residence consisting of two bodies, built between the 1920s and the 1930s. The outcome of the intervention is a coherent volume, where the irregular layout of the existing building has been transformed by a thick layer of rustic plaster, laid with trowels, and the geometry of the fir wood grafts.

The grafts on the facades of the building correspond to the openings, such as the monumental entrance door and the terrace, that further emphasize the primary elements of the existing façade. Particularly in the case of the entrance door, that highlights the point where the two bodies of the house come together. The new layout allows the building to achieve uniformity, as well as a sense of rigorous rituality.
The residence develops on three levels and is accessed through a stair that brings to the first floor, containing a living room, a dining room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The interiors are bright, with wood and grey finishes that recall the materials of the exteriors. The upper floor hosts the night area with two bedrooms that face a wide terrace, overlooking the front garden. The ground floor is an independent studio apartment.
