A coloured sail marks the entrance to a swimming pool in Texas

Specialised in parametric design, Marc Fornes / Theverymany has built an iconic canopy for the Westside Natatorium in El Paso.

Marc Fornes / Theverymany, Marquise, El Paso, Texas, 2018

Marc Fornes / Theverymany is an architecture firm based in New York City, specialised in parametric design and construction of ultra-thin sinuous structures. Marquise is the latest realisation of the studio, the new entrance to the Westside Natatorium in El Paso, Texas. The canopy is made of curved aluminum panels, featuring a two-way Cheshire gradient in deep blues and warm yellows that alternate graphically to emphasize the sweeping surfaces. Seemingly inflated by the wind, as a tent or sail, the self-supporting structure consists of a double curve and rests on the ground on two concrete bases containing seats. The space generated is not just a visual attraction for the sport center, but a pleasant resting place enhanced by the play of shadows.
