The Portuguese studio Nuno valentim – Arquitectura Reabilitação has renovated a farm in Lisbon. Built in the 17th century by the Parish of Benfica, the complex has undergone many transformations over time. It consists of several buildings that define a central entrance space. The main volume features solid stone walls and secondary wooden structures; the floors, as a result of numerous interventions, are instead made of concrete. The lower southern volume, built in the 1960s, stands out for its brick ceilings and arches.

The functional program planned for the Portuguese Episcopal Conference is complex and diversified. The main building houses spaces for management and coordination, numerous work spaces, meeting rooms and an archive. The secondary buildings have a simpler architectural layout, both constructive and decorative, and have been compartmentalized in a way that doesn’t allow for connection between each other. The designers decided to demolish the interior levels and remove the false ceiling to show the roof structure – in excellent condition – so as to fully exploit the interior volume. To keep the decorative elements intact, the materials used are identical to the existing ones, avoiding the removal of elements or materials that could be treated and stored.
